PARTS OF SPEECH

1.  NOUN

A noun is the name of a person, a place or a thing in a sentence, therefore a noun is a name of a person, animal, place or thing.

A noun is also a word that is the name of something (such as a person, animal, place, thing, quality, idea, or action) and is typically used in a sentence as subject or object of a verb or as object of a preposition.

There are two major kinds of Nouns:

(a) common nouns

(b) Proper Nouns

Common Nouns refers to the followings

1. A thing: A Radio, A table, A book etc

A Book



2. A person: A teacher, A principal, A Student 

3. A plant: An Orange, A tree, A thrumbush, A maize

4. An animal: A goat, A cattle, A cow, A lion

5. A quality or idea: Wisdom, Freedom, Courage

6. A place: village, towns, city 

    Proper Nouns are exact name of a particular place or people and they usually start with capital letters

They include:

(a) Names of persons, tittles, principals such as Dr. Joseph, Mr. Joshua, Mrs. Esther, Mr. Felix

(b) Names of place: Kogi, Lagos, Adamawa, Illorin, Ikeja

(c) Names of schools: United Evangelical Church Secondary School, Government Secondary School.

(d) Names of Subjects: English Language, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry.

(e) Names of days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, .............

(f) Names of months of the year: January, February, March, ......... December.

(g) Names of festivals: Easter, Christmas, Ramadan. 

    There are two types of common nouns: Countable and Uncountable nouns

Countable nouns refers to things or person, animal, etc. we can count for example: Person, Cow, Book, Tree, etc.

Uncountable nouns refers to things we cannot count. They are: Sound, Rice, Water, oil, etc.

Apart from the above mentioned kinds of nouns , we also have 

collective Nouns, for example:

  • A collection of Sheep is called a Flock
  • A collection of Cow is called a herd
  • A number of people living together is called a Family
  • A number of sticks or clothes or object tied together is - Bundle. 

NOTE

One can identify some nouns in a sentence. that is, a particular isolated word may not be called a noun unless it is in a sentence e.g man (a) i saw a man yesterday- (noun) (b) Go and  man the gate - verb. The same applied to all part of speech.

 In other words, parts of speech are better identified in a sentence.

EXCERCISE

A. Underline the countable nouns and uncountable nouns in the sentence below: and indicate countable nouns with C and uncountable nouns with UNC.

1. our school is near the market.

2. The farmer worked in the sun.

3. The Tailor bought a new sewing machine.

4. My sister cooked my Favorite Food.

5. Their Teacher bought a bag of rice

6. John killed a Ram.

7. The salt is much in the soup.

8.  My Mother sells Oil and Sugar.

9. Joy can Swim

10. There is light in the room.

B. List another ten countable and uncountable nouns and make sentences with them.
